Did you see the news about the Pope and artificial intelligence?
The Pope released an encyclical — an official public document — about artificial intelligence: saying we need to think about its development alongside human development, and that it cannot harm children, for example.
Many people might think a religious leader has no business getting into a subject like this. In reality, he is on a mission of peace. Trying to understand it, just like the rest of us — we who say “please” to artificial intelligence, afraid that one day it might turn against us. And he wants to use his influence, which is more than the influence of one person: it is his position at the head of a religious institution, so that we can agree on some ground rules.
Imagine, before long, wars fought between robots powered by artificial intelligence. Robot against robot. This is a subject that should indeed be considered and put on the agenda by people with influence. He even says the conversation must include the poorest people, those with the least purchasing power — because they are affected too, and they have opinions too.
So let’s keep an open mind toward a better development alongside artificial intelligence. And a better development of artificial intelligence.
Because I don’t know how much you know about this: artificial intelligence already develops itself. Today it programs its own development. We have already reached the point where a human being can no longer review all the code that an artificial intelligence produces. So we need to set some boundaries.
We have to think. And, actively, we have to act.
I want to share more and more good examples of human capacity being expanded. Artistic capacity being expanded through artificial intelligence. Because all of this is possible: having that intention, that dedication, and that good use.
