F.O.M.O.: the fear of missing out

Have you ever heard of F.O.M.O.? It stands for the fear of missing out — the fear of missing something.

It’s the habit of grabbing the phone all the time because we think we’re about to miss something happening in a parallel world, the digital world. “Oh, someone’s going to send me a message, let me check, let me…” It gets to the point where people wake up in the middle of the night to look at their phones.

We have to be careful with this, because we’re losing the presence of the now. But this is no monk talk. Monk talk is nice too, but we don’t need to go that far, to distance ourselves from this reality.

Reality is being present in what we actually need to do, when we need to do it. There are moments when we really will need to pick up the phone and keep an eye on it, because an important message is coming.

But let that be for the moment. Not for a lifestyle.
